The Read Manchester BookBench Project

Read Manchester

Read Manchester is a campaign from Manchester City Council and the National Literacy Trust to promote reading and boost literacy levels.

The campaign calls on schools, community groups, libraries, businesses and residents to get involved and encourage reading in all Manchester communities, to help improve the life chances of children and young people in the city.

The BookBench Project

As part of Read Manchester, the National Literacy Trust and Manchester City Council have teamed up with Wild in Art to bring their iconic BookBenches to the city. Schools and community groups have decorated book-shaped benches inspired by reading and they’ll be displayed across the city this summer. Families can follow the BookBenches trail across Manchester and will be able to take part in literacy activities and events at the venues involved. Find out more at readmanchester.org.uk

Our pupils have designed a BookBench which is based on '60 Years of Reading'.

Celebrating 60 years in 2017 the school’s design represents the children’s favourite authors and books from across six decades starting with The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, first published in 1957. Our BookBench is on display at Lowry Outlet The Quays, Salford Quays M50 3AH T: 0161 848 1850 Lowry Outlet The Quays

We encourage you to follow the trail with your child over the summer holidays and use it as an opportunity to talk about reading. Children will be able to complete fun activities that link to the themes of some of the benches and lots of the venues will be hosting special events.

Trail map and quiz - A map of the BookBench trail and a quiz to complete for the chance to win prizes.

Many of the BookBenches are displayed at the city’s libraries. A visit to one of these is a great opportunity to sign your child up for the Summer Reading Challenge at the same time.
