Year 4 2019 - 2020
Topic - I am Warrior
This half term we are becoming historians and travelling through time, learning about the Romans! We can't wait for our trip to Chester where we'll get to handle Roman artefacts and practise our battle skills in the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre. Our classes have been honing our investigative skills by using evidence to generate lines of enquiry, create a hypothesis then look at more evidence to discover if what we originally believed to be true was correct, incorrect or partly correct.
As part of Anti-Bullying Week, we have read the book ‘The Hundred Dresses’ by Eleanor Estes. From the point of view of the main characters, Maddie, Peggy and Wanda, we have thought about their actions, those of their friends, recognised what bullying is and its consequences. From the perspective of Maddie, we have written a letter to Wanda to apologise for the choices we made.
During this half term, Year 4 will be creating their own stories based on events in ancient Pompeii, finding out about life in the Roman army, through the eyes of a centurion, and writing a letter to those at home who are waiting for us to finish our 25 years’ service.
So far in Year 4, we have built upon our existing knowledge of place value, Roman Numerals and counting backwards through zero. As well as this we have finally tuned our written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division which we have applied when solving word problems and undertaking investigations. We have regularly been practising our times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars. Please make sure you are practising at home too as these skills have been essential in helping us answer our multiplication and division questions quickly and accurately in class.
During Guided Reading, we have sharpened our skills reading through Reading Plus, vocabulary building activities and reading with our teacher. To help our skills grow, we need to ensure we are frequently accessing Reading Plus at home, as well as reading to an adult.
Please make sure you have your kit in school each day. This needs to consist of:
- yellow top
- black shorts / leggings
- pumps / trainers
- green jumper
Each Monday morning, we enjoy taking part in our swimming lessons, as all children are required to be able to swim 25m by the time they leave primary school. Remember to bring your swimming hats as part of your swimming kit.
